Wolf PAC’s Technical Apprentice Program (TAP) is a unique opportunity for students in 7th-12th grade interested in behind-the-scenes skills to learn from professional Designers, experienced Directors and skilled Technicians. At the end of the program, you are awarded a Certificate of Completion!

What is a Technical Apprentice?

A Technical Apprentice is a student in 7th-12th grade who has applied and has been accepted into one of our behind-the-scenes positions during Wolf PAC’s performance seasons. Apprentices will learn from a professional throughout the rehearsal process and work with production teams to expand their theatrical knowledge while at the same time contributing to the magic of a Wolf PAC production.

Directing Apprentice (DA)
All positions are filled for spring 2024.

The Directing Apprentice (DA) will work closely with a directing team for an intensive, behind-the-scenes experience designed to support the performers and artistic team. DAs will gain skills in management, leadership, and collaboration as they become an integral member of the production team to help create theater with younger performers.

This position is ideal for anyone who is interested in mentoring younger students, learning the art of directing and assisting backstage during the tech process.

Responsibilities & Goals:

  • Assist artistic team from start of the rehearsal process through performances

  • Collaborate with actors and directors for a unified vision of the production 

  • Enhance leadership and mentorship skills 

  • Lead small rehearsals in any discipline (choreography, music direction, etc.) as discussed and decided with team

  • Work in small groups to review choreography, blocking, lines, lyrics, etc. as needed

  • Assist with all stage management needs (attendance, blocking, tracking information, etc.) for rehearsals

  • Work backstage during tech, dress and performances in a stage manager role (for 3rd-6th grade DAs)

  • Perform as a narrator in a guided experience with the actors (for Jungle Jamboree DAs only)

Props Apprentice (PA)
All positions are filled for spring 2024.

The Props Apprentice (PA) will work alongside a professional props designer for our 5th & 6th grade musical, Shrek The Musical JR, to get a full experience in helping design and execute the props component of a musical from beginning to end. Once in the technical phase of the rehearsal process, the PA will be backstage, overseeing all props needs for the performances. 

This position is ideal for anyone who has a passion for art, painting, and crafts and is curious about how these design elements are created and used in a theatre setting.

Responsibilities & Goals:

  • To assist Props Designer with vision, execution, and tracking of props

  • To collaborate with the Props Designer on designing, pulling, and curating props

  • To manage the backstage area and props table during dress rehearsals and performances

  • To enhance independence and leadership skills

  • To hone and expand artistic skills through the creation and building of props

  • To learn more about and be comfortable backstage in a new environment

Costume Apprentice (CA)
All positions are filled for spring 2024.

The spring only Costume Apprentice (CA) will work with our Costume Manager and all of our costume designers in support of our productions this fall at Wolf PAC. They will have a unique experience that will allow them to be involved in the process from vision inception to tech to execution across the board of all shows! 

This position is ideal for someone who is interested in costuming and costume design but wants to learn more about the skill from various designers.

Responsibilities & Goals:

  • To assist our designers from start of the rehearsal process through performances

  • To enhance independence and leadership skills

  • To learn more about the behind-the-scenes process from concept to performance

  • To build skills as needed for costume design (sewing, stitching, sketching, etc.)

  • To help prep backstage for dress rehearsals 

  • To assist backstage during performances for quick changes and other costume needs

Costume Apprentice (CA) FULL YEAR
All positions are filled for spring 2024.

The full year Costume Apprentice (CA) will work with our Costume Manager, Courtney Boches, to learn the ropes in the fall and then have the opportunity to collaborate on design for a spring production. They will meet one-on-one with Courtney to learn about creating a vision, working with a directing team and executing their own design from beginning to end. 

This position is ideal for someone who already has some costume experience and is interested in being guided in the creative process of designing their own work.

Responsibilities & Goals:

  • To assist the Costume Manager from start of the rehearsal process through performances

  • To enhance independence and leadership skills

  • To collaborate with others as they unify their design with the director’s vision

  • To create their own vision for design with help from the Costume Manager

  • To build skills as needed for costume design (sewing, stitching, sketching, etc.)

  • To help prep backstage for dress rehearsals 

  • To assist backstage during performances for quick changes and other costume needs 

Board Apprentice (BA)
All positions are filled for spring 2024.

The Board Apprentice (BA) will choose the element that excites them most (lighting or sound) and work with a professional technician on one of our 7th-12th grade full-length fall plays. After the team’s second production meeting, they will work with their specific technician for the remainder of the tech process on creating, building, and operating cues and will run and operate the board for dress rehearsal and the performances of the production. 

This position is ideal for anyone interested in the technical elements of a performance and eager to learn the tools needed to run a light or sound board.

Responsibilities & Goals:

  • To learn how to run and operate equipment needed

  • To enhance independence and leadership skills

  • To learn about the behind-the-scenes process from concept to performance

  • To understand more about the tech, dress rehearsal, and performance experience from a technical perspective 

  • To work one-on-one with a technician and learn how lighting or sound fits into the production’s vision

The BA will assist our professional technician with one of our 7th-12th grade performances. Positions will be assigned after the audition process has ended to accommodate anyone who is interested in doing both TAP and performances.
